Red Badge of Courage- 11/17/2010

Okay students, you have read Killer Angels and part of Red Badge of Courage.
1. What are your first impressions of Red Badge?
2. Other than the length, what are the primary differences you have noticed between the two books, especially in regard to language?  Please be specific!
3. Does Red Badge's language remind you of anything else you have ever read? (I'm leaving this question vague to see in what directions you might take it.)

I enjoy red badge of courage more than The Killer angels. I feel this way because it talks about his fear of running his feelings of thinking hell be great. Its more about his fellings then battle plans to conquer the opposing side of people.

  4. I like this book a lot more than The Killer Angels because it doesn't have to do so much with the battle and more with his feelings. The difference would have to be how it is written. You can imagine how things are said `better by the way things are said and phrased.

  5. Good comments so far! Does anyone feel the speech (all their slang) is hard to read?

  6. haha yeah can we say very hard to read!!! Well i did not read the first book so i won't be able to talk about that! but the language is quite like many books you will read set in this era. I am finding this book rather hard to hard to read simply because i can't get into it!! i am trying my hardest to read this though. i am unsure how i will truly feel about this book though.........

  7. I agree that it is a bit hard to get into. i also think that their speech is a little harder to understand just because im not used to it.

  8. I like the slang it uses it makes it entertaining. And in comparison I like how it is about the guys thoughts rather then the battle. I don't know how it compares to Killer Angels yet because I have not read the entire Red Badge of Courage yet.

  9. My first impressions of Red Badge were that I didn't like the book at all. The book seemed to wordy to me and I had to reread a lot of the text to finally get the meaning of what it was saying. However, as I read into the book I find myself getting more drawn into the story.
The things I have noticed different about Red Badge than the Killer Angels were(like we discussed in class) the description of Red Badge is a lot more through than the Killer Angels. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. For me, it tends to confuse me rather than help me picture the scene. But still, like I said above, I find myself drawn into it especially beginning with tonight's chapters.

  10. I love how this actually tells emotion of the character, in my opinion its better than Killer Angels. Its not all about battle. But im the kind of person who understands things through emotion and not battle stratagies. It doesnt really capture my attention.

  11. Hey Mr. Shelton!
My First Impression of "Red Badge of Courage" is that it is a lot better, in my opinion, than "Killer Angels" because it has a different type of view, rather than from the same generals over and over again. The language and the visualization of the book is different, like I said before, it isn't just the same generals over again, it too, isn't just about the war either, it's more of a coming to age during the time period. I can't really compare it to anything I have really read though!

  12. Good comments everyone. Truthfully... I didn't like it the first time I read it, and I struggled through it. The second time, I started picking up on the little nuances in the poetic-like language. Now that I am reading it a third time, I am seeing what all the fuss is about. The impressionistic style is not conducive to a quick read, but when I take the time to immerse myself in the "poet's" vernacular, I find my mind abuzz with the purposful vagueness. It naturalistic qualities allows me the opportunity to live a barbaric life through "the youth."

  13. Yeah, I kind of think it's a bit complicated for me to understand. It really just confuses me.

  14. I like this book more than Killer Angels, yeah it's harder to read, but i like poetic wording in it. And you actually have to think about it, more so than KA. I admit im a little behind on the reading, but I still like it!

Also this book is better because it's not so much about war like KA is, truthfully I hate war books, but this book describes the the emotions of "the youth" and I like that.

  16. Killer Angels is just long and hard to get into also is The Red Badge of Courage. Difference is, once you get into TRBoC it's more interesting, like Wish You Well. TRBoC is better with imagery and the poetic aspect.

  17. Just finished the TRBofC. I have to say, the ending with a ray of sunshine coming over the hill was just a little cliche. However, I like an occasional cliche in my reading. Definitely NOT a book you can skim but as a whole, it was an interesting and educational read. I liked it.
